On March 18, 2004, in response to the development trend of audiovisual media and educational research, it was renamed the "Taiwan Association for Educational Communication and Technology" (TAECT). It continues to focus on researching, advocating and promoting educational technology and audiovisual communication.

Our association actively engages in research and promotion of educational communication and technology, with specific tasks including...

The study of educational technology and audiovisual communication theories.

Advocating the implementation of educational technology and audiovisual communication.

Promote the application of educational technology and audiovisual communication in teaching.

Assist in the production of audiovisual media, computer teaching materials, and equipment.

Publish educational technology and audiovisual communication journals.

Organize various activities related to education, technology, and audiovisual communication.

History of this Association

The Rise of "Audiovisual Education"
In 1952, UNESCO visited China and established the Technical Assistance Office, sending Dr. E.F. Overend, an American, as an advisor to assist in the development of audiovisual education in Taiwan. The Ministry of Education also appointed Mr. Yen Ching-run as Dr. Overend's secretary. In 1953, Dr. Overend and Mr. Yen Ching-run established audiovisual education courses at National Taiwan Normal University (then called Taiwan Provincial Normal College). From then on, Audio-Visual Education was officially named "视听教育" (Shìtīng jiào yù).

Units promoting "audiovisual education" have been established one after another.

In 1955, the government established the "Audiovisual Education Center" attached to the National Taiwan Normal University to promote and develop audiovisual education nationwide.

In 1956, the National Educational Archives was established, and the Audiovisual Education Center concurrently served as the Audiovisual Education Section of the archives.

In 1956, the Taiwan Provincial Primary School Teachers' Training Association was established. It conducted training programs for primary school teachers, including a course on "Audiovisual Education."

In 1959, the China Audiovisual Education Association was established.

In 1960, the Secondary School Teacher Training Center was established at the National Taiwan Normal University. It provided in-service training for secondary school teachers, including the subject of "audiovisual education".

In 1960, the "Educational Broadcasting Station" was established.

In 1962, the "Education Television Station" was established.

In 1966, the Ministry of Education established the Advanced Commercial Vocational Broadcasting Experimental Supplementary School.

In 1971, the "China Television Company" was established to broadcast educational programs. The online schools offered courses for senior high schools, commercial high schools, technical high schools, teacher training colleges, business colleges, vocational colleges, and university elective courses.

In 1986, the "National Open University" was established.

In 2004, the Chinese Audiovisual Education Association was renamed the "Taiwan Educational Communication and Technology Association".

In 1970, the "Regulations for the Implementation of Audiovisual Education" were promulgated.
Thanks to the advocacy and promotion of audiovisual education scholars, the national academic community has gained a deep understanding of how using audiovisual teaching methods can improve learning outcomes. The Ministry of Education, accepting the academic community's suggestions, promulgated the "Implementation Measures for Audiovisual Education" on May 22, 1970, to assist in the development and application of school and social education. (Ended November 4, 1998)

The Society's significant contributions to education nationwide

"Audiovisual Education" is a compulsory subject.
During the period of teacher training colleges, due to the need for pre-service teacher training and the suggestions of members of this association, scholars and experts, the original elective course "Audiovisual Education" was changed to a compulsory course. In 1961, when the teacher training college was reorganized, it remained a compulsory course. In 1987, when the teacher training college was reorganized, the course was renamed "Teaching Media". In-service teachers have studied "Audiovisual Education" or "Teaching Media" related courses at the summer program of teacher training colleges, the Air Teacher Training College, the National School Teachers' Workshop, and the Secondary School Teachers' Workshop to increase their teaching knowledge and skills and innovate teaching methods.

Promotion of "Unit Teaching Activity Design"
In 1960, the "lesson plan" was changed to "unit teaching activity design." The Audiovisual Education Center invited scholars and experts from the association, internship guidance directors from teacher training colleges, and provincial and municipal supervisors to hold several meetings, deciding to change the "lesson plan" to "unit teaching activity design." The original forced, indoctrination-style teaching objectives—what students should do, how they should be made, or even how they should be cultivated—were changed to behavioral objectives—what students can do and what they will learn. The teaching activities (process) were changed to preparatory activities, developmental activities, and integrated activities. This flexible and effective "unit teaching activity design" for teaching and learning was promoted to schools at all levels throughout the country.

Schools at all levels held observation and teaching sessions using audiovisual methods.
Schools at all levels across the country (elementary, junior high, junior high, and senior high schools/vocational schools) are conducting observational teaching sessions using audiovisual methods. Teaching plans are developed based on unit-based teaching activities for each subject, and new audiovisual teaching methods are implemented to stimulate students' active and enjoyable learning, thereby improving teaching effectiveness.

Establishment of provincial and county/city-level guidance teams
In 1958, the Taiwan Provincial Department of Education established the National Education Itinerant Guidance Team. Subsequently, various counties and cities also established their own National Education Guidance Teams. Through the design of unit teaching activities and audiovisual teaching methods, they improved teachers' teaching techniques, enhanced students' learning interest, and improved teaching quality, making a great contribution to the reform of national education throughout Taiwan.

Publish a special issue on "Audiovisual Education"
On June 15, 1959, the Audiovisual Education Center of National Taiwan Normal University launched the professional journal "Audiovisual Education." It was a bimonthly publication, published in odd-numbered months, with a print run of 1500 copies per issue, distributed free of charge to elementary and secondary school teachers and educators. Its purpose was not only to promote the concept and application of audiovisual education but also to disseminate information and developments in the audiovisual education field both domestically and internationally, making a significant contribution to the development of audiovisual education in Taiwan. Publication ceased after August 2007, with Volume 49, Issue 1 (total issue 289).

The establishment of various teaching media centers in schools at all levels
To promote the use of teaching media and enrich audiovisual equipment and teaching materials, establishing media centers in schools at all levels became a key focus at the time. In higher education, in 1958, the College of Agriculture at National Taiwan University, with US aid, established the "Audiovisual Education Center," making it the earliest dedicated audiovisual education unit in a general university (non-teacher training institutions) in Taiwan. In 1969, Tamkang University established the "Audiovisual Center" and the "Educational Materials Science Research Laboratory," and in 1971, it established the "Department of Educational Materials Science," becoming the earliest school in Taiwan to establish a single department emphasizing the use of audiovisual education to promote educational and teaching innovation. Therefore, the use of audiovisual facilities was not widespread in the 1960s and prior. However, with the development of the times and the government's emphasis, the Taiwan Provincial Department of Education, to further improve teaching, established various teaching media centers in high schools, vocational high schools, junior high schools, and elementary schools.

Organize competitions for teachers at all levels to create their own teaching media
During this stage, extensive efforts were made to promote teaching through workshops for teachers at all levels, learning how to design teaching units, creating their own teaching media, and holding teaching observations and media competitions. Among elementary school teachers, the largest-scale workshops and productions were those organized by the Taiwan Provincial Elementary School Teachers' Workshop. The teaching materials produced were mostly aligned with elementary school curriculum units and included various types of materials, which were provided for elementary school teachers to borrow. In the 1960s, the government even funded the large-scale production and distribution of teaching materials and aids. To further promote the practice of teachers creating their own media, the Taiwan Provincial Department of Education held a nationwide teaching media competition for six consecutive years starting in 1984.

Research on Sequencing Instruction / The Beginnings of Computer-Assisted Instruction
In the 1960s and 70s, educational scholars who had studied in the United States returned to Taiwan, bringing back the concept of sequenced instruction. Some key national schools also experimented with using sequenced teaching materials. Later, the Ministry of Education and the Provincial Department of Education subsidized some scholars to conduct research projects on sequenced instruction. Computer-assisted instruction, which evolved from sequenced instruction, also began to receive government attention, and pilot projects were promoted. In addition, some advanced universities, such as Tamkang University, started their own research even earlier. The subsequent rapid development and evolution of computer-assisted instruction has revolutionized the nature and appearance of this field.

Advocating and promoting digital learning
Since 1935, depending on the characteristics and development emphasized in different eras, the name has evolved from audiovisual education, audiovisual education, audiovisual communication, and instructional technology to today's digital learning. This is due to the rise of the Global Information Network, where the digitization, networking, and cross-platformization of information have become trends, allowing learning to transcend the limitations of time and space. The convergence of media technologies, and the involvement of fields such as information technology and communication technology, have also given educational technology a more diverse and innovative appearance. However, regardless of these changes, they all inherit an important spirit—to make learning or work more efficient through media technology and content design, which is also the focus of this association's advocacy and promotion of digital learning.

Publishes academic journals in teaching technology and media (Instructional Technology & Media).
The Society established the "Bimonthly Journal of Teaching Technology and Media" on February 15, 1992, as an important publication for educational institutions at all levels in Taiwan to understand the development of teaching media and technology. Starting with issue 55, published on March 15, 2001, it became a quarterly publication. From issue 103, published in March 2013, it was renamed "Educational Communication and Technology Research." The journal's content covers a wide range of topics including audiovisual education, audiovisual media, audiovisual teaching, educational technology, teaching technology, information technology, communication technology, digital technology, digital learning, educational communication, media, multimedia, media literacy, distance learning, online learning, mobile learning, games and learning, as well as educational theories and teaching methods. It broadly accepts theoretical and practical research papers, presenting them in two main categories: theoretical research and applied development.

(Source: Honorary Professor Zhang Xiaoting, Honorary Chairman of this Association)

["post-3399","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
